Appointments to the RDA Steering Committee

Appointments to the RDA Steering Committee

The RDA Steering Committee is pleased to announce two new appointments.

Kathy Glennan is the new Chair-Elect.

Ebe Kartus is the new Wider Community Engagement Officer.

Both Kathy and Ebe are current members of the RSC, as representatives of the American Library Association (ALA) and the Australian Committee on Cataloguing (ACOC) respectively. Each brings a wealth of expertise in the current strategy and development of RDA to their new roles.

Kathy Glennan has more than 30 years of experience cataloging scores and audio recordings, commencing in 1985 with a one-year NEH grant funded position at the Arnold Schoenberg Institute, then located at the University of Southern California. She subsequently became USC’s music cataloger, a specialization she held until moving to a similar position at the University of Maryland in 2005, where she now serves as Head of Original and Special Collections Cataloging.

Since 2005, Kathy’s professional contributions and scholarship have focused on the development of RDA: Resource Description and Access, with a special emphasis on music cataloging instructions. In 2013, she became the ALA Representative to the Joint Steering Committee for Development of RDA, which became the RDA Steering Committee in 2015. In this role, she has spent her time interpreting RDA instructions, identifying problems, and shepherding change proposals from ALA to improve RDA. She has given numerous presentations on RDA, FRBR, and MARC Formats issues, including four webinars relating to RDA for the Association of Collections and Technical Services division of ALA. She also authored an article in the March 2012 issue of the Music Library Association’s quarterly journal Notes, “The Development of Resource Description and Access and Its Impact on Music Materials.”

Ebe Kartus has worked in a number of University libraries, and is currently working as Library Content and Discovery Manager at the University of New England in New South Wales. She has also worked in a wide variety of other library environments including library vendors. Ebe has been a cataloguer for about 25 years and has been a member of ACOC since 2002, served as ACOC Chair 2003-2011, and is currently the Australian representative on the RDA Steering Committee. She believes we should be sharing data more and adding value to records for all the library community to utilize. Her next big resource description adventure (hopefully) will be with linked open data.

Ebe has been co-chair for the 2016 VALA Libraries, Technology and the Future conference and is co-chair for the 2018 conference. She was also co-chair for VALA Tech Camp in July this year. Ebe is also a member of the IGeLU/ELUNA (Ex Libris User Groups) Linked Open Data Working Body and co-chair of the IGeLU/ELUNA Community Zone Management Group.

Both appointments commence in January 2018. Kathy will have one year in the role of Chair-Elect, overlapping with Gordon Dunsire; his role as chair ends in December 2018. She will then begin a four-year term as Chair. Ebe's appointment is for two years, ending in December 2019. The roles made vacant by these appointments will be absorbed by the transition to the new governance structure for RDA.
