Special RDA Event in Chicago May 16, 2017
The RDA Steering Committee (RSC) cordially invites interested catalogers and metadata application developers to a special, one-day event of focused discussion of some of the current challenges for RDA.
"Reconstructing RDA in the LRM: aggregations, authorities, and appellations" will be held in Chicago, Illinois on Tuesday, May 16, 2017, preceding the RSC meeting. The specific location, and other event details, will be announced shortly.
This event is an opportunity for community input to the RSC in several areas of interest to catalogers, particularly (1) the treatment of aggregates, and (2) authority control in the world of linked data. The impact of the IFLA LRM (Library Reference Model) and the "4-fold path" on RDA will be discussed. In addition, latest news will be shared about the 3R Project (RDA Toolkit Restructure and Redesign Project) and NARDAC (North American RDA Community), the organization being developed as part of the new RDA governance structure.
There is no registration fee for this event; a light lunch and refreshments will be provided. The number of attendees will be limited; if you would like to attend, please send an expression of interest via email as soon as possible to the RSC Secretary-Elect, Linda Barnhart, at rsc_sec2@rdatoolkit.org.
The RSC meeting itself, to be held May 17-19 at the American Library Association headquarters in Chicago, will be an all-Executive Session meeting focused on the 3R Project and will be closed to observers.
(For our European colleagues: The RSC plans a second meeting in 2017, to be held at the Biblioteca Nacional de España in Madrid, Spain, from October 23-27. This Madrid meeting will also include events for community input, especially for colleagues in that area of Europe and for translators.)
The RSC wants to hear from the cataloging communities as we strive to implement new concepts in RDA, such as Nomen, attribute/relationship duality, and short-cuts. Reconstructing RDA in the LRM is an opportunity to be heard and to influence the course of action. We look forward to seeing you in Chicago on May 16, 2017.
