Chicago - Tom Delsey, a Canadian consultant specializing in information modelling, has been appointed editor of the next edition of The Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules (AACR), one of the world's leading sets of cataloguing rules.
The Committee of Principals for AACR made the appointment in preparation for a comprehensive revision of the rules. The new edition, with the working title of AACR3 : Resource Description and Access, will be published in 2007 and will enable easier application of international cataloguing principles to new and existing materials.
Delsey, based in Ottawa, Canada, has extensive library and information modelling experience. His consulting projects have included the Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records (FRBR) and the Functional Requirements and Numbering of Authority Records (FRANAR) for the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA). Delsey also prepared The Logical Structure of the Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules for the Joint Steering Committee for Revision of AACR (JSC).
Prior to becoming a consultant, Delsey was Director General, Corporate Policy and Communications, at the National Library of Canada. Delsey was the 2003 recipient of the Margaret Mann Citation awarded by the Association for Library Collections & Technical Services (ALCTS) Cataloging and Classification Section (CCS) for outstanding professional achievement in cataloguing or classification.
Libraries and library service suppliers throughout the world use the Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules, second edition (AACR2) to describe and provide access to materials in their collections. AACR is revised and maintained by the Joint Steering Committee for Revision of AACR (http://www.collectionscanada.ca/jsc/index.html) and governed by the Committee of Principals for AACR. AACR is co-published by the American Library Association, the Canadian Library Association, and the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals (UK).
