Outcomes of the Meeting of the Joint Steering Committee Held in New Haven, Connecticut, USA, May 13-15 2002
This is a brief summary of the JSC meeting in New Haven, which was held in Executive Session. A complete list of topics discussed is contained in the agenda.
Strategic Planning
A major focus of the meeting was strategic planning for JSC and AACR. A vision statement, goals and strategies were drafted and will be discussed with the Committee of Principals.

JSC Format Variation Working Group
JSC discussed the second interim report of the Format Variation Working Group and provided feedback to the Group.

Incorporating FRBR Terminology in AACR
JSC reviewed the first report from Pat Riva on incorporating terminology from the IFLA Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records in AACR. A revised report will be discussed at the September meeting.

Malay Names
In early 2002 JSC received correspondence regarding progress on rule revision proposals for Malay names originally issued in 1998. At the meeting JSC decided to ask ACOC to review existing rules for Malay and Indonesian names and prepare new proposals.

Other Agenda Items
Among the other items discussed were:
- The revised Appendix of Major Changes prepared by ALA. Those constituencies that had not already done so were asked to respond.
- ALA proposal to remove area 3 from chapter 9. Constituencies were asked to further consider the options presented. CCC was asked to prepare a proposal on the use of conventional terminology in area 5 in chapters 6 and 7.
- The rule of three and chapter 21. It was decided to pursue a complete revision of the chapter, with terms of reference to be discussed at the September meeting.
- Authority records. It was agreed that authority records should be included explicitly in AACR. The Library of Congress was asked to prepare a proposal on a new part III of AACR.
- GMDs and the class of materials concept. Discussion will continue at the September meeting.
