Teaching RDA in the LIS Classroom: Report and Webinar

In September 2021, Elisa Sze of the University of Toronto was appointed to the position of Education and Orientation Officer for the RDA Steering Committee (RSC). Her charge as EOO is to liaise with LIS educators and instructors across multiple regions, creating an informal network of RDA educators and instructors and feeding the perspectives and needs of the educational community back to the RSC.

During the 3R Project, several RDA elements were identified as being redundant with other elements or were considered to be too granular in scope. These elements were "soft-deprecated". The RSC is curious to know about how institutions are addressing these elements of the RDA Toolkit. A survey regarding soft-deprecated terms is available to complete by 15 September 2023. 

How to Propose a Change to RDA

The “Submit Feedback” link in the official RDA Toolkit enables users to provide information about typos, errors, and broken links, as well as suggested changes to the text. Some of this feedback has resulted in updates to RDA. But for more significant changes to RDA, cataloging communities have another venue to suggest modifications: the RDA change proposal process.

Practical Implications: A Look at Cataloguing a Book Using the New RDA

On August 21 of this year, the European RDA Interest Group, along with the IFLA Cataloguing Section and the IFLA Committee on Standards, sponsored an IFLA World Library and Information Congress satellite meeting in Thessaloniki, Greece, at the Central Library of Aristotle University. The program covered a wide range of RDA topics and included speakers from Africa, Europe and North America.

The RDA Steering Committee (RSC) met in October on the campus of McGill University in Montréal, Québec. This week the RSC posted key documents describing the events and outcomes of that meeting. The most important outcome of the meeting is the announcement that  the English language version of the revised RDA standard will stabilize in April 2019. Spring RDA Event scheduled for May in Chicago

The RDA Steering Committee has announced a community outreach event in Chicago on Tuesday, May 16th. It will be a day-long event that will be attended by an extended RSC group (full RSC plus working group chairs) and will feature an open discussion of the most pressing RDA issues, including the LRM-related revisions and the redesign of the toolkit. Then event is free and will include lunch and beverages. However, space is limited so register as soon as possible. Read the full announcement.

RSC announcement regarding IFLA-LRM

Following their November meeting in Frankfurt, the RDA Steering Committee (RSC) announced their plans for the implementation of IFLA's Library Reference Model (LRM) in RDA. Although the LRM has not yet been officially approved and published by IFLA, the RSC felt the need to get in front of this work in light of the production opportunities already underway with the 3R Project and that any modifications to LRM prior to official approval would not be significant.

The RDA Board and RDA Steering Committee (RSC) are seeking a qualified library professional with expertise in RDA and cataloging to take on the role of RSC Secretary. The purpose of the role is to support and coordinate processes which support the development and promotion of RDA. This is a contract position with a 3-year term, and there is no location requirement (the work may be done from home). There will be a period of overlap with the term of the current secretary to allow for thorough training and a fluid transition for this crucial post.
